Have you been hearing lately or have you been finding new Mylar Embroidery Designs you would like to try?? It's a lot easier than you think. Certain mylars can be used as an applique and give wonderful sparkle and shimmer to your mylar designs. Check this one out: http://www.gailsembroideryspot.com/fleur-de-lis-MYLAR These instructions and photos were prepared for the mylar fleur de lis two color design sold here, but you can adapt them to other designs digitized for mylar. You may not get the results you like unless the design was digitized specifically for use with mylar, although some applique designs may possibly work. Always test first. We tested designs on opalescent colored Prisma-brand mylar which was purchased through www.hobbylobby.com because Prisma-brand had been tested by other digitizers and embroiderers and found to be good for washing. After testing, we did wash and dry several tested designs in the washer and dryer. I recommend not leaving the garment or item in the dryer long, or possibly hand wash if you have not tested laundering capabilities yourself. Or you can stitch on a project which does not have to be laundered. The mylar fleur de lis design does well also on fabric without the use of mylar. We have also learned that the mylar can be found at other hobby stores, gift supply and variety stores as well as online. If you buy mylar that you have tested which was satisfactory, please email me with the cost of the item, the brand you used, the color, and where it was purchased so that I can to begin a source list to share. Remember too: if you normally use topping stabilizer on certain fabrics, that this mylar acts as a topping and holds down stitches on fabrics that may need topping (top stabilizers), such as towels, velour, etc. Hope you enjoy stitching embroidery designs with mylar! If you can, please send your photos using my designs for the Customer Spot
Prepare your fabric and hoop as usual and then lay a piece of mylar no bigger than your hoop on top of the hooped fabric.
The first stitch around the design will hold the mylar flat. (You can also use tape to hold the mylar on the edges of the hoop before the first stitching but do not use spray adhesive!) This design was embroidered on a navy blue tshirt with cutaway stabilizer below and the mylar on top. Mylar acts as a topping when stitching on fabrics where a top stabilizer is needed such as velour, tshirt fabric, pique knits, towels, etc., so that stitches will not sink into the fabric threads but stay on top.
After the fill motif was stitched, I was able to gently tear away the excess mylar before continuing with the outer satin stitch.
You can wait until the satin stitching is completed and the design is finished sewing to very carefully tear the mylar away from the design if you have not done so before the outer border of satin stitching was started. Different threads and fabrics as well as different colored mylar will produce dramatic effects! Have Fun!
I did use tweezers in the tighter spots.

This is what the design looked like after tearing away the excess mylar before satin stitching around. Notice how the iridescent mylar used gives added sparkle under the stitching.
